Most weekday mornings, skincare and makeup have to fit into the time between your alarm and your cab. A ten-step routine isn’t realistic, and you don’t need one. A short, well-ordered morning routine does two jobs at once: it looks after your skin and it gives your makeup a smooth, comfortable base to sit on so it lasts through the day.
This is a simple five-minute morning routine to do before makeup, with tips for oily and dry skin and how to prep the eye area so your eyeshadow stays put.
Short on time?
- Minute 1: wash with a gentle cleanser and lukewarm water, using your fingertips.
- Minute 2: a light moisturiser (gel for oily skin, cream for dry skin).
- Minute 3: sunscreen, SPF 30 or higher, about a teaspoon for face and neck.
- Minutes 4–5: let it settle while you do your hair, then prime your lids and start makeup.
- Keep the eye area gentle and wash your hands before you touch your makeup.
Why a morning routine matters for makeup
Makeup sits on top of your skin, so whatever your skin is doing shows through. Flaky patches catch foundation, an oily T-zone makes eyeshadow slide into the crease, and skipping moisturiser can make concealer look cakey. A few minutes of prep fixes most of this before it starts.

The 5-minute routine, step by step
Minute 1: Cleanse gently
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends a gentle, non-abrasive, alcohol-free cleanser applied with your fingertips and lukewarm water. It advises against scrubbing, since that irritates the skin, and suggests patting dry with a soft towel. The AAD also says to limit washing to twice a day and after heavy sweating, which is worth remembering in humid Indian summers.
If your skin is dry or sensitive, a splash of lukewarm water may be enough in the morning. If it’s oily, a gentle foaming or gel cleanser works well.
Minute 2: Moisturise
Even oily skin usually looks better under makeup with a little moisture. The trick is choosing the right texture.
- Oily or acne-prone skin: a lightweight gel or oil-free moisturiser.
- Combination skin: a light lotion, with a little extra on dry areas only.
- Dry skin: a richer cream. The AAD’s tips for dry skin suggest applying moisturiser while skin is still slightly damp and choosing fragrance-free products.
When you apply anything around your eyes, use your ring finger and a light touch. The AAD notes that the skin there is delicate and shouldn’t be pulled.
Minute 3: Sunscreen
This is the step that matters most for your skin’s long-term health. The AAD recommends a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. For the face, it suggests using at least a teaspoon, roughly the amount that covers the length of your index and middle fingers. It also notes that UV exposure happens every time you go outside, even on cloudy days and in winter.
If your sunscreen leaves a white cast or feels greasy under makeup, try a gel or fluid texture, or a tinted sunscreen. The AAD adds that tinted sunscreens with iron oxide help protect against visible light, which can contribute to dark spots.

Minutes 4–5: Let it settle, then prep your eyes
Give your sunscreen a few minutes to settle before you apply foundation. Use this time to brush your hair, get dressed or have your chai. Makeup applied straight on top of wet sunscreen tends to pill and slide.
While you wait, prep your eyes:
- Blot your lids with a tissue to remove any moisturiser or sunscreen that has collected there. Oily lids are the main reason eyeshadow creases.
- Apply a thin layer of eye primer or a tiny dab of concealer.
- Let it set for a few seconds before applying shadow.
Now, the makeup
With this base, a quick office look takes just a few more minutes:
- A light layer of skin tint, BB cream or concealer only where you need it.
- One shade of eyeshadow tapped across the lid with your finger. A rose eyeshadow or a soft brown works for most skin tones and office settings.
- Kajal or liner on the upper lash line, kept off the waterline if your eyes get dry.
- Mascara, a swipe of blush and a lip colour.
Mousse textures are quick for mornings because they blend with a fingertip. Our guide on our step-by-step application guide walks through it.
Adjusting for Indian weather
Humid summer and monsoon
Use lighter textures across the board: gel moisturiser, fluid sunscreen and minimal base. Set the T-zone and lids with a little powder. Carry blotting papers rather than adding more powder through the day.
Dry winter
Switch to a creamier moisturiser, especially in north Indian winters. Don’t skip sunscreen just because it’s cool and hazy outside. A hydrating primer under foundation helps stop flakiness.
Hygiene habits that protect your skin and eyes
An ophthalmologist quoted in Hindustan Times recommends washing your hands and face before applying makeup, cleaning brushes and applicators regularly, not sharing eye products, checking expiry dates and throwing out products that smell bad or look clumpy. She also warns that itching, tearing or burning that doesn’t go away should be checked by a doctor.
If you’re trying a new skincare product, patch test it first on a small area, such as behind the ear or on the jawline, for a few days. If you have persistent acne, rashes or sensitivity, a dermatologist can recommend a routine that suits your skin.
FAQ
What is the correct order of skincare before makeup?
Cleanser, moisturiser, sunscreen, then makeup. If you use a serum, it goes after cleansing and before moisturiser.
How long should I wait after sunscreen before makeup?
Give it a few minutes to settle so your foundation doesn’t pill or slide. The AAD recommends applying sunscreen about 15 minutes before going outdoors, so applying it first thing works well.
Can I skip moisturiser if I have oily skin?
Most oily skin still benefits from a lightweight, oil-free gel moisturiser. It can help makeup sit more smoothly.
Why does my eyeshadow crease by noon?
Usually because moisturiser or sunscreen has collected on the lids. Blot your lids and use a thin layer of eye primer before applying eyeshadow.
