Pink Eyeshadow for Indian Skin: Looks to Match Pastel and Pink Outfits

Pink eyeshadow can look tired on Indian skin, or gorgeous. The difference is the shade and placement. Here's how to choose and wear it.

Pink eyeshadow has a reputation problem in India. Plenty of us have tried a pretty pink from a palette, looked in the mirror and seen tired, puffy, just-cried eyes. So we put it back and stick to brown.

The truth is that pink works on Indian skin. It just has to be the right pink, placed the right way. And when you’re wearing a pastel pink kurta, a blush lehenga or a pink summer dress, a matching pink eye looks fresh and pulled-together in a way brown can’t. Here’s how to choose the pink, and how to wear it without looking unwell.

Short on time?

  • Choose pinks with warmth: rose gold, dusty rose, rosewood, peachy pink, or pink with gold shimmer.
  • Be careful with chalky baby pinks that have a white base, especially on wheatish and dusky skin.
  • Add a warm brown or orange in the crease so pink doesn’t look flat.
  • Define the lash line with kajal or brown liner. It makes pink look deliberate.
  • With a pastel outfit, go softer on the eyes. With a hot pink outfit, pick a deeper or shimmery pink.

Why pink sometimes looks “wrong” on Indian skin

Most Indian skin leans warm or neutral. Many pinks, especially pale pastels, are cool and have a white or blue base. Put a cool, chalky pink on warm skin and the contrast reads as redness, which is why the eye can look irritated.

Faces Canada’s eyeshadow guide for Indian skin tones goes as far as saying pinks and reds can wash out the gold in medium skin, and can give fair skin an uneven finish. We’d add a nuance. It’s mostly the cool, flat pinks that cause trouble. Pinks with gold, peach or brown in them sit much better.

Femina makes the same point for brown skin, recommending pinks with warm undertones such as peachy pink, coral pink or rose gold, and pairing soft pink eyeshadow with a touch of gold shimmer in the inner corners or along the lower lash line.

Which pink for your skin tone

Skin tone Pinks that usually work Go carefully with
Fair Soft rose, mauve-pink, rose gold, pink with champagne shimmer Bright hot pink all over the lid
Wheatish Rose gold, peachy pink, dusty rose, pink-gold Chalky baby pink
Dusky Rosewood, deep dusty rose, berry, pink with strong gold shimmer Pale pastel pinks, frosty pinks

Shimmer is your friend. A pink with sheen reflects light instead of sitting flat against your skin, so it reads as glow rather than redness. For more on shades by skin tone, see our guide to eyeshadow shades for Indian skin tones.

Look 1: Soft pink-gold for pastel outfits

Perfect with a pastel pink kurta, a blush pink summer dress or a light pink saree for a daytime function.

  1. Prime or conceal the lid so any darkness doesn’t turn the pink muddy.
  2. Tap a pink with golden shimmer across the lid. Makné Pink Gold is described by the brand as a blend of blush pink and golden shimmer, which is exactly the kind of warm pink that suits wheatish skin.
  3. Line the upper lash line thinly with brown liner or kajal.
  4. Mascara, a soft rosy blush, and a pink-nude lip.

Keep the look soft. With pastel clothes, a strong eye can overpower the outfit.

Look 2: Dusty rose for every day

Dusty rose and rosewood shades are the easiest pinks to wear daily because they have brown in them. They look like a warmer version of a neutral eye.

  1. Sweep a dusty rose shade over the lid. Makné calls Rosewood Shine a deep, dusty rose with multi-dimensional shimmer, and lists it as its bestselling shade.
  2. Add a little warm brown in the crease. This trick comes from style blogger Coco Bassey, quoted in The Zoe Report: blend an orange or brown shade into the crease to warm the pink up and add dimension. She also says she gravitates towards dusty rose over neons and pastels.
  3. Smudge kajal on the upper lash line.

Works with office kurtas, denim, and almost any pink or neutral outfit.

Look 3: Bright pink for hot pink outfits and parties

A hot pink or fuchsia outfit can take a bolder eye. This is where a vivid, shimmery pink shines.

  1. Prime well. Bright colour shows every patch.
  2. Pat a vivid pink onto the centre of the lid and blend the edges outward. Makné Charming Pink is described as a playful, vivid pink shimmer for girls’ nights and festive celebrations.
  3. Deepen the outer corner with brown so the pink doesn’t spread too far.
  4. Define with black kajal and plenty of mascara.

If a full pink lid feels like too much, try pink only on the inner half of the lid, or along the lower lash line under brown liner.

How to match pink eyes to a pink outfit

  • Don’t copy the exact shade. Matching your eyeshadow perfectly to your dress can look costume-like. Go a shade deeper, warmer or shinier.
  • Pastel outfit, soft eyes. Pink-gold, champagne-pink, or rose gold.
  • Bright outfit, defined eyes. A vivid pink with strong liner, or a rosewood shade with a dramatic wing.
  • Pink with gold embroidery. Pick a pink with gold shimmer, or use gold on the lid and pink only on the lower lash line.
  • Think about your lips. Pink eyes with a pink lip and blush gives a monochrome look that’s very pretty in daylight. For contrast, try a nude or peach lip.

Little things that make pink work

Always define the lash line

Pink eyeshadow on its own can blur the eye. A line of kajal or brown liner gives the eye shape and makes pink look intentional.

Keep pink off the waterline

Pink right on the rim of the eye exaggerates redness. Keep it on the lid and lower lash line only. (An ophthalmologist quoted in Hindustan Times also advises against applying makeup on the waterline at all, as it can block the oil glands there and lead to dry eyes.)

Brighten the inner corner with gold, not white

Gold or champagne in the inner corner warms pink up. Stark white can make it look cooler and chalkier.

Check it in daylight

Pinks look very different in yellow bathroom light. Step near a window before you leave.

FAQ

Does pink eyeshadow suit dusky skin?

Yes. Choose deeper, warmer pinks such as rosewood, dusty rose or berry, ideally with shimmer. Pale, chalky pastels are the ones that tend to look grey or ashy on deeper skin.

Why does pink eyeshadow make my eyes look tired?

Usually because the pink is cool-toned or placed too close to the lash line without definition. Switch to a warmer pink, add brown in the crease, and line the upper lash line with kajal.

What eye makeup goes with a pastel pink outfit?

Soft pink-gold, rose gold or champagne-pink on the lid, thin brown liner and mascara. Keep it soft so the outfit stays the focus.

Can I wear pink eyeshadow to the office?

Yes. A dusty rose or rose gold with brown in the crease looks close to a neutral eye, just warmer.
