December in India comes with a packed calendar: office Christmas parties, a friend’s house party, a rooftop dinner, and then the big one, New Year’s Eve. You want to look like you made an effort, but you also want to dance, eat, stay out late and still be comfortable at 1 am.
The easiest way to stop the last-minute panic is to plan one complete party look, outfit to eyes, and then tweak it for each event. Here’s how to build it.
Short on time?
- Plan the outfit a week ahead and try on everything together, shoes included.
- Pick one hero: a sequin dress, a velvet co-ord or a metallic saree. Keep the rest simple.
- Colours that read “party”: black, deep red, emerald, midnight blue, gold and silver.
- Eyes: one shimmer or glitter shade on the lid, liner, mascara. Glitter stays on the lid, never near the waterline.
- Pack a small touch-up kit for midnight photos.
Start with the event, not the outfit
Before choosing anything, ask three questions:
- Indoors or outdoors? A Delhi rooftop on 31 December needs a layer. A Mumbai house party needs breathable fabric.
- Sitting or dancing? A fitted bodycon looks great at dinner and less great on a dance floor.
- How late? If you’re going from office to party, you need a look that transitions.
Choose your hero piece
The sequin or metallic dress
The classic New Year’s Eve choice. A midi or knee-length silhouette is easier to move in than a mini, and a slip or wrap cut is more forgiving than bodycon. Pair with simple strappy heels and very little jewellery.
Velvet
Velvet is made for December. A velvet blazer over a silk camisole and black trousers, a velvet slip dress, or a velvet co-ord in wine or emerald. It looks rich in photos and works well in north Indian winter nights.
The party saree
A sequin, tissue or metallic saree with a sleeveless or halter blouse is a lovely Indian take on holiday dressing. Drape it neatly so you can move, and pin the pallu if you plan to dance.
The dressy co-ord
Satin or shimmer trousers with a matching shirt, worn open over a bralette or tucked in. Comfortable, modern and easy to dress up or down.
For black outfits in particular, our guide to eye makeup for black dresses and sarees has more ideas.
Build the rest around it
- Shoes: block heels or platform sandals if you’ll be standing for hours. Practise walking in new heels at home first.
- Layer: a long coat, a faux-fur stole or a tailored blazer for outdoor events in the north.
- Jewellery: sequins + statement earrings is plenty. If the dress is plain, go bigger on earrings or a cuff.
- Bag: a small clutch or chain bag big enough for your phone, keys, lip colour and blotting papers.
The party eye look
A party eye doesn’t have to be a full smoky eye. One strong shimmer or glitter shade, well placed, photographs better and is easier to keep fresh through the night.
Step 1: Prep
Apply a thin layer of eye primer or concealer on the lid so colour looks true and lasts longer. In Vogue India’s tips on long-lasting makeup, makeup artist Jamie Genevieve recommends a primer that feels slightly tacky and setting the areas where makeup moves most with a light powder. Crowded rooms get warm, even in December.
Step 2: Pick your shade by outfit
| Outfit | Eye shade |
|---|---|
| Black or midnight blue | Silver-lavender glitter or a warm gold |
| Red or wine | Warm gold or brown shimmer |
| Emerald or green | Gold, bronze or mauve |
| Gold or metallic | Soft brown with a pearl inner corner |
| White or silver | Rose gold or mauve |
A glitter eyeshadow like Makné Stardust, which the brand describes as a multi-toned glitter that shifts between silver, lavender and champagne, is made for New Year’s Eve with black. For red or green outfits, a warm gold eyeshadow (Makné Pink Gold) is the safer, softer choice.
Step 3: Apply and define
Pat the shade over the lid with a fingertip, build a second layer in the centre of the lid for extra shine, and blend the edges. Add a winged or smudged liner and two coats of mascara. If you want more depth, run a little brown shimmer into the outer corner.
Step 4: The inner corner
A dot of pearl or champagne shimmer in the inner corner wakes up the eyes for night photos. Keep it on the skin, not inside the eye.
If you’d rather buy shades that are designed to work together, an eyeshadow set (makne.in) with a glitter, a mauve and a peach covers most party outfits. For quicker looks, see our 10-minute festive eye looks.
Eye safety at party time
Glitter, late nights and shared products are a risky mix for your eyes. An ophthalmologist interviewed by Hindustan Times advises:
- Being cautious with glittery or iridescent products, as tiny particles can irritate the eye.
- Not applying makeup on the waterline or inner eyelids, as this can block oil glands and lead to dry eyes, with extra care for contact lens wearers.
- Not sharing brushes, eyelash curlers or testers, because sharing raises the risk of infections.
- Not moistening dried mascara or liner with water or saliva.
And however late you get home, remove your eye makeup before sleeping. If your eyes are red, itchy or painful the next day, see a doctor.
Lips, skin and the rest
- Lips: with a glittery eye, a nude or rose lip keeps things balanced. With a simple gold eye, a classic red is very festive.
- Base: a little highlighter on the cheekbones catches party lights. Keep it off the nose and forehead if you get oily.
- Hair: a sleek low bun or soft waves both last well. Pin it back if you’re wearing big earrings.
Your midnight touch-up kit
- Lip colour and a small mirror
- Blotting papers
- Cotton buds to fix smudged liner
- A small pressed powder
- Safety pins and a hair tie
FAQ
What should I wear to a New Year’s Eve party in India?
A sequin or velvet dress, a dressy co-ord or a metallic party saree all work. Pick one statement piece, keep accessories simple and carry a layer if the party is outdoors in north India.
What eye makeup goes with a black sequin dress?
A silver-lavender glitter or a warm gold shimmer on the lid, with liner and mascara. Keep the lip soft if the eye is glittery.
Is glitter eyeshadow safe?
Keep glitter on the lid and away from the waterline, since ophthalmologists warn that tiny particles can irritate the eye. Remove it carefully before bed and stop using it if you feel irritation.
How do I make party makeup last all night?
Prime the lids, set your base lightly with powder, use waterproof mascara and carry a small touch-up kit with blotting papers and lip colour.
